MechaPaint / Formats & Specs
THE DETAILSFormats, specs, and what is next
Everything MechaPaint opens and everything it writes, the technical details, and a plain answer about PBR.
It probably opens what you have
Drag it on, or use the file dialog. Notably, LightWave LWO3 objects, including LightWave 2025 files, are read natively, with each surface arriving as its own paintable submesh.
The fine print, minus the pain
PBR is coming. Here's why it isn't here yet.
MechaPaint paints color textures today. It does not yet author full PBR material sets, and we'd rather say so plainly than bury it in a footnote.
We picked the interface first
A tool with every channel in the world and an interface that fights you is a tool nobody finishes a model in. We spent our time making the painting itself fast, obvious, and pleasant. That part is done, and it's the part that's hardest to retrofit later.
Color is most of the work anyway
For an enormous amount of real production work, characters, clothing, props, mobile assets, Roblox and Polytoria items, stylized film work, the base color map plus baked occlusion is the whole job. That's what MechaPaint does, thoroughly.
PBR is next on the list
Roughness, metallic, and normal channels are actively in development and will arrive as a free update. If you buy during your upgrade year, you get them at no extra cost.
